Tell us a bit about yourself and your shop.

I have been painting the prairies and, in particular, the plants, of northern Illinois for many years.  This obsession started over 15 years ago when I began monitoring butterflies for the Nature Conservancy at Illinois Beach State Park.  It was like winning the best lottery ever!  There are more butterfly species there than almost anywhere else in Illinois.  Having a background in science, it wasn't long before I was studying the relationships between the butterflies and their host plants.  From that grew an interest in the communities plants form, and the geological history that goes into why.  It delights me no end when a botanist will come up to me and be able to say what species I've represented in a painting, and where I found it!  Indeed, my painting career has evolved into a conversation I am having with my fellow nature lovers, as well as those who haven't yet fallen in love with the nature here at hand.

Why did you choose Etsy to sell your items?

I read a lot of business books, and I have learned that you need to tell people that you are an artist... I might be working on a pen and ink drawing while sitting at Panera, for example.  One day a woman stopped to chat with me and she told me she had a shop on Etsy, and that I should check out the site.  I am so glad she did~ I love Etsy for giving us all the opportunity to make a living doing what matters to us.  Before that, I was trying to get my work into stores, or considering buying a store myself.  I may still do that one day but it is out of my reach right now.  Etsy makes it possible to reach people now, without having to buy a building.  Plus, of course, there is the potential to reach far more people from a far wider area than any brick and mortar store can hope to reach.

What are your favorite materials/techniques and why?

I am a painter~ I devote all of my time to creating in that medium, because I want to be as great as it is in me to be.  I learned to paint with acrylics...I won't switch to oils because I believe I can achieve anything with acrylics, and am having a blast trying.  I divide my time between the field, learning, seeing, sketching and photographing, and my studio.  I prefer to paint in the studio, where I can control the light and don't have to worry about bugs biting me while I work.  Also, I like to sing while I work, so privacy is a must!

Tell us briefly the stages of processing of your products.

The first step of a painting for me is to sit and meditate...I am visualizing composition, color, mood.  Then, I jump in with swirls of color to create an underpainting.  This is great fun.  After this layer is dry, I begin to bring in detail.  This is the careful part.  In my head are some of the really powerful compositions I have seen by such artists as N.C. Wyeth and Robert Bateman.  I ask myself, how did they place their elements to evoke such a powerful response?  How can I  use that with my subject?  I have learned a great deal doing this, and I think my work is growing.  I hope so.  I know that improving is a life-long journey.

One thing I'd like to mention to people is, take note of current trends.  When I am watching a TV show, for example, I notice the artwork that was chosen for the walls of the settings.  What colors are designers using now?  How much detail, how busy are the images?  My goal is to align my work with what people will most respond to.  It is still my voice, my original work, just in tune to the times.  This is a new thought for me, and I am excited about it and wanted to share it.

Do you think people should buy handmade? Why?

Yes, definitely people should buy handmade, if they can.  One of the things that has gone wrong in our world is that the economy has been hijacked by enormous companies.  I think that to some extent we all now live in "company towns", and it scares me because we don't even know the extent of it.  When people band together, as we have on Etsy, we are taking back our country in a peaceful, positive way.  We are weaving more strands into the fabric of our country, and this will make it stronger.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

Where I'll be 5 years from now is a big question for me, but I know for sure I will still be an artist.  My business is growing, I am learning, and I am determined that whatever else, I will be making my living with my paintbrush.  Communicating a love for nature in my paintings~ this is what I was born to do.

Raccontaci qualcosa di te e del tuo negozio.

Dipingo praterie, soprattutto le piante, del nord Illinois da molti anni. Questa ossessione è iniziata più di 15 anni fa quando ho iniziato a monitorare le farfalle per la Nature Conservancy all'Illinois Beach State Park. E' stato come vincere alla migliore lotteria! Nell'Illinois ci sono più specie di farfalle che in qualunque altro posto. Avendo un background nel campo scientifico non è passato molto tempo prima che studiassi le relazioni tra le farfalle e e le loro piante ospite.

Da quello è cresciuto l'interesse per le forme dei vegetali e la  loro storia geologica. E' una delizia senza fine quando un botanico viene da me ed è in grado di riconoscere quale specie ho rappresentato in un dipinto e dove l'ho trovata! Infatti la mia carriera da pittrice si è evoluta con le conversazioni avute con i miei compagni amanti della Natura, così come con quelli che non si sono ancora innamorati delle bellezze della natura che hanno qui a portata di mano.

Perchè hai scelto Etsy per vendere i tuoi dipinti?

Ho letto tanti manuali sul business, e ho capito che bisogna far sapere alla gente di essere un artista...posso lavorare con penna e inchiostro mentre sono seduta al Panera per esempio. Un giorno una donna mi fermò in chat e mi disse che aveva un negozio su Etsy e che avrei dovuto visitare il sito. Sono così lieta che l'abbia fatto! Amo Etsy perchè da a tutti l'opportunità di guadagnarsi da vivere facendo ciò che gli piace. Prima di aprire lo shop su Etsy stavo cercando di ottenere vendite nei negozi e pensando di aprirne uno mio. Potrò ancora farlo un giorno, ma al momento è fuori dalla mia portata.

Etsy permette di raggiungere le persone senza dover acquistare un locale. In più, naturalmente, c'è la possibilità di raggiungere molte più persone che un negozio fatto di mattoni e calce possa mai sperare di raggiungere!

Quali sono i tuoi materiali/tecniche preferite? Perchè?

Sono una pittrice- dedico tutto il mio tempo a questo mezzo perchè desidero essere grande tanto quanto il mio talento lo permette. Ho imparato a dipingere con gli acrilici, non passerò ai colori ad olio perchè credo di poter ottenere tutto con gli acrilici. Divido il mio tempo tra la campagna, l'imparare, il guardare, il fotografare e il disegnare e il mio studio. Preferisco lavorare in studio dove posso controllare la luce e non mi devo preoccupare degli insetti che mi pungono mentre lavoro. Poi, mi piace cantare mentre dipingo, quindi la privacy è un'esigenza!




Raccontaci brevemente gli steps del tuo processo di lavoro.


Il primo passo per un dipinto per me è sedermi e meditare...visualizzo colori, composizione, tema. Poi salto a fare volute di colore per fare un fondopittura. Questo è molto divertente. Quando questo strato è asciutto passo ai dettagli. Questa parte richiede cura. Nella mia testa ci sono alcune potenti composizioni realizzate da alcuni artisti come N.C, Wyeth and Robert  Bateman. Mi chiedo, come hanno fatto a mettere  insieme i loro elementi per evocare una risposta così potente? Come posso usarli nei miei soggetti? Ho imparato molto facendo questo e credo che il mio lavoro sia in crescita. So che imparare è un viaggio che dura tutta la vita.


Una cosa che vorrei ricordare alle persone è prendere atto delle tendenze attuali. Quando guardo un programma televisivo, per esempio, noto il quadro che è stato scelto per le pareti della scenografia. Quali colori stanno usando i designers adesso? Quanti dettagli? Quanto sono movimentate le immagini? Il mio obiettivo è allineare il mio lavoro con le cose a cui le persone reagiranno di più. E' proprio la mia voce, il mio lavoro originale ad essere in sintonia con i tempi. Questo è un nuovo pensiero per me e sono entusiasta di condividerlo.


Seconde te le persone dovrebbero comprare handmade? Perchè?


Si, credo assolutamente che le persone debbano comprare handmade, se possono. Una delle cose andate storte nel nostro mondo è che l'economia sia stata dirottata dalle grandissime compagnie. Penso che oggi tutti viviamo nel "paese delle grandi aziende" e questo mi spaventa perchè non conosciamo la sua portata. Quando le persone si incontrano, come su Etsy, riportano il nostro paese su una strada tranquilla e positiva. Staimo tessendo altri fili nel tessuto del nostro Paese e questo lo renderà più forte.


Dove ti vedi da qui a 5 anni?


Dove sarò da qui a 5 anni è una grande domanda per me, ma di sicuro so che farò l'artista. La mia attività sta crescendo, sto imparando. Ho deciso che a qualunque costo vivrò della mia pittura. Comunicando l'amore per la Natura nei miei dipinti-questo è quello per cui sono nata.
