This week interview with Lisa Disciascio and her jewels

Tell us a bit about yourself and your shop.

I have been a creative person my whole life, creating in itself makes me immensly happy.  I am a mother to two girls, 16 and 10.  Being a mother has been the most rewarding experience by far of my life.  Creating though gives me my biggest sence of self .  I am most happy when I am thinking up new ideas.  My shop consists entierly of creations made from re-claimed wood, fallen branches.  I create one of a kind necklaces, keychains, earrings, rings and wine charms. 

Why did you choose Etsy to sell your items?

I chose Etsy to sell my items because when I found Etsy I was in awe- completely amazed at the talent and I just wanted to be a part of it.  As I started listing my items and figuring it all out, the people that I met on Etsy were "my people"  Amazing artist with so much heart, always willing to lend a hand.  This has been one of the greatest experiences I could have found at this time in my life.

What are your favorite materials/techniques and why?

My favorite material? Wood.  At the moment anyway, I have always loved working with wood, I love the smell, I love when you sand it down it starts to shine (in my eyes wood shines anyway, lol)  My favorite technique is painting on wood, when I get a vision of something that truly inspires me, I have to do it right then and there, it could be 3am, if I am inspired, out of bed I go.  I also love words, words have always inspired me, if I can incorporate words into my pieces, those always become favorites.

Tell us briefly the stages of processing of your products.

It all starts with a wonderful hike through the woods.  I search out fallen branches and with the wild storms we had this past summer, there are plenty.  I haul them back to my house, get the saw out and start cutting.  It always amazes me when I make that first cut at the beauty that lies within a piece of wood.  The grain, the shape, the irregularities.  From there, I sand down each piece and start to create, my amazing daughters inspire most of my pieces, I think about them and what they would love, then i create.  When each piece is finished, I seal them all.

Do you think people should buy handmade? Why?

I am all for handmade!  Handmade is the heartbeat of our world.  To buy something that someones hands have put love into is the most amazing feeling, those pieces will be cherished more deeply than anything machine made.  My pieces are all one of a kind, that individuality makes them special.  I feel a connection to every pices i make and I hope my buyers feel that too.

Where do you see yourself 5 years from now?

In five years...I am an optimist so I see my self in my own space (room, garage, attic) somewhere of my own creating.  Right now we have a small house and i create at our kitchen table, a table I built and love of course but not my "own" space.  I yearn for my own creating space where I can really spread my creativity and grow my business.  I hope to see myself creating full time and able to support my family doing it.  That is my dream and everyday I work towards it.

Raccontaci qualcosa di te e del tuo negozio.

Amo il craft da tutta la vita, l'artigianato in se mi rende assolutamente felice. Sono la mamma di due bambine di 16 e 10 anni. Essere diventata mamma è stata l'esperienza più gratificante di tutta la vita. Il pensiero artistico mi da il più grande senso del mio io. Sono più felice quando sto pensando ad a nuove idee. Il mio negozio è basato interamente su lavori fatti con legno di recupero proveniente da rami caduti.Realizzo pezzi unici come collane, portachiavi, orecchini, anelli e wine charm (segnaposto da attaccare ai bicchieri da vino)

Perchè hai scelto Etsy per vendere i tuoi lavori?

Ho scelto Etsy perchè quando ho scoperto il sito ero in soggezione, completamente stupita dal talento, e volevo farne parte.  Come ho iniziato ad elencare i miei articoli e a mostrare tutto, le persone che ho incontrato sono state il "mio popolo". Incredibili artisti dal cuore grande sempre pronti a dare una mano. Questa è una delle più grandi esperienze che abbia mai potuto fare in vita mia.

Quali sono le tue tecniche/materiali preferiti? Perchè?

Il mio materiale preferito? Il legno. Al momento comunque, ho sempre amato il legno, amo l'odore, amo quando lo carteggi e inizia a brillare (ai miei occhi il legno brilla comunque!). La mia tecnica preferita è la pittura su legno, quando ho la visione di qualcosa che davvero mi ispira devo farlo li e subito, possono essere le 3 di mattina, se ho un'ispirazione scendo dal letto. Amo anche le parole, mi hanno sempre ispirato, inserisco parole nei pezzi quelli diventano subito i favoriti!

Raccontaci brevemente gli stadi del tuo processo di lavorazione.

Inizia con una fantastica escursione nel bosco. Cerco rami caduti e con le tempeste che ci sono state l'Estate scorsa ce ne sono un sacco. Li trascino tutti a casa, prendo la sega fuori e inizio a tagliare. Mi stupisce sempre quando faccio il primo taglio alla bellezza che giace dentro un pezzo di legno. La grana, la forma, le irregolarità. Dopo carteggio e inizio a dipingere, le mie fantastiche figlie ispirano molti dei miei pezzi, penso a loro, a cosa potrebbe piacergli, e realizzo i miei oggetti. Quando ogni pezzo è finito sigillo tutto.

Pensi  che le persone dovrebbero acquistare handmade? Perchè?

Sono totalmente a favore dell'handmade. Il fatto a mano è il battito del cuore del nostro mondo. Comprare qualcosa in cui le mani di qualcuno hanno messo amore è la sensazione più incredibile, quei pezzi saranno conservati più profondamente di un qualsiasi oggetto fatto a macchina. I miei sono tutti pezzi unici, l'individualità li rende speciali. Sento una connessione con ogni pezzo che faccio e spero che i miei clienti avvertano la stessa sensazione!

Dove ti vedi da cui a 5 anni?

In 5 anni...sono ottimista così mi vedo in un mio spazio (stanza,garage,attico), un posto in cui lavorare. Ora abbiamo una casa piccola e io lavoro sul tavolo della cucina, un tavolo che ho costruito  e che di certo amo ma che non è il mio spazio. Ho nostalgia del mio luogo  dove posso davvero lavorare e far crescere la mia attività. Spero di occuparmi del mio negozio a tempo pieno e di supportare la mia famiglia facendo questo.

Questo è il mio sogno e lavoro ogni giorno per realizzarlo.
